Each year, Outside Magazine compiles a list of the Best Towns in America for access to outdoor activities, affordable housing and a stable jobs market. In 2010, the publication named Charleston, South Carolina, among the top 25 best towns to live. Charleston was specifically recognized as one of the best places to live in America for surfing. Boeing Boosts Charleston’s Economy

Boeing has provided a major boost to Charleston’s already stable economy. A recently released report indicated that The Boeing Co.’s decision to build and assemble a portion of its 787 Dreamliners in Charleston will add $6.1 billion annually to the state’s economy.
The study, conducted by Miley & Associates Inc., predicts that Boeing’s presence will create more than 15,000 new jobs in the area. The job numbers include Boeing’s own 3,800 workers and workers for suppliers and jobs created by the spinoff effects of those new jobs.

Charleston in Top 5 Accomplishments for South Carolina

The South Carolina Department of Commerce released its choices for top five accomplishments in 2009. The annual Activity Report choices are summarized below.
1. The Boeing Co.’s selection of North Charleston for the second assembly line for the production of the 787 Dreamliner.
2. SC ranked fourth among states and provinces in North America for jobs recruited. The study was conducted by IBM and was released in their Global Location Trends Annual Report.
3. SC led the Southeast in job recruitment, bringing in more than 18,000 new jobs in 2009.

Development officials have announced that a new product distribution center will be opening in the latter part of 2010 in Charleston, SC. The center promises upwards of 500 new jobs over the span of five years.
Moulton Logistics Management of Los Angeles publicized its plans to invest $25 million in the distribution center which will be located near the Port of Charleston. The plans for expansion allow the company to operate from both coasts in the United States thus providing easy access to overseas markets.

A recent analysis by MarketWatch placed Charleston, SC in the Top 50 for best cities in which to do business. Charleston ranked 47 while fellow South Carolina cities, Columbia and Greenville, placed just outside the Top 50, ranking 56 and 67, respectively.
MarketWatch ranked the nation’s 101 largest metropolitan areas with at least 500,000 people, using 10 different metrics. The metrics are broken down into two main categories: company concentration and economic stability.
