Charleston’s official history begins in 1670 when a group of English aristocrats colonized the area. Rice and cotton plantations as well as a booming port helped Charleston to quickly grow to the distinction of the richest city per capita in the American South. Charleston played important roles in the protest against the Tea Act of 1773, the trans-Atlantic slave trade and in the Civil War.
